Friday, May 1, was a day of standout performances across the Appleton area high school sports scene, with track and field, softball, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, and golf teams all taking the field. The action was intense, and the results are in—here's a closer look at the highlights that had fans on their feet.
Boys Track and Field: Winneconne Dominates the Field
Winneconne put on a clinic, racking up 122 points to claim first place at the meet. Green Bay Preble followed with 112, while West De Pere (102), Kimberly (74), and Little Chute (71) rounded out the top five. The team's depth was on full display, with eight individual event wins and a relay victory powering their charge.
Hudson Samolinski was a force in the throws, taking first in both the discus (170 feet, 8 inches) and shot put (56 feet, 4 inches). Brody Schaffer showcased his versatility, winning the long jump (22 feet, 6 inches) and the 100-meter dash in a swift 10.82 seconds. The 1,600-meter relay team of Luke Fuller, Logan Wolf, Koltyn Kachur, and Grant Wenzelow sealed the win with a time of 3:28.88. Wenzelow also claimed the 800 meters (1:56.36), while Kachur took the 200 meters (22.33 seconds).
Jacob Nuthals of Green Bay Preble was a double winner, dominating the distance events with first-place finishes in the 1,600 meters (4:27.60) and 3,200 meters (9:50.41).
Girls Track and Field: Kimberly Edges Out the Competition
On the girls' side, Kimberly secured the top spot with 135 points, powered by four individual event wins. Xavier (84) and West De Pere (82.5) pushed hard, but Kimberly's consistency carried the day.
Madison Krueger led the way with a victory in the 800 meters (2:22.61), while Addison Johnson took the 1,600 meters (5:14.70). Theresa Behnke dominated the discus with a throw of 135 feet, 3 inches, and Annabel Schneider cleared 4 feet, 10 inches to win the high jump.
Xavier had its own stars shine bright. Kayla Fournillier won the 100 meters (12.70 seconds), Grace Hackl took the 200 meters (26.54 seconds), and Caroline Basehoar soared to victory in the pole vault (11 feet, 6 inches). Xavier's 400-meter relay team of Lauren Erickson, Fournillier, Hailey Hafner, and Bryce Hietpas also struck gold with a time of 50.96 seconds.
The Freedom quartet of Ashley Hietpas, Marisa Greiner, Mara Janssen, and Gabriella Hambel won the 800-meter relay (1:48.74), with Hietpas also claiming the 100-meter hurdles (14.85 seconds). Green Bay Preble's Arya Shefchik took the 3,200 meters (10:52.92), and Fox Valley Lutheran's Claire Fischer won the 400 meters (1:00.85). West De Pere's Kaylin Thomson also made her mark, adding to a day full of impressive individual efforts.
