As Antrim prepare for their latest bid to end a long wait for an Ulster SFC win, former captain Paddy Cunningham discusses the challenges facing the county.

As Antrim gear up for their Ulster SFC quarter-final clash with Derry this Saturday, the county finds itself reflecting on a long road back to glory. The memory of their famous 2000 victory over Down at a rain-soaked Casement Park—a win that ended an 18-year drought—remains a powerful touchstone, but it’s been a challenging journey since.

That 2000 triumph sparked a period of renewed hope, culminating in a memorable run to the 2009 Ulster final. However, the landscape has grown tougher. In the years since, Antrim has managed just a single Ulster championship win—a narrow victory over Fermanagh in 2014—and only two senior championship wins outside the Tailteann Cup.

Facing a formidable Derry side at Celtic Park, Antrim are clear underdogs. Yet, as former captain Paddy Cunningham notes, the task, while immense, is not without hope. "It's going to be a huge task on Saturday," Cunningham admits, drawing from his experience leading the side in 2009.

There are positive signs. After a rocky start with three losses in Division Four this season, the team rallied impressively with four consecutive wins. While it wasn’t enough for promotion, that fighting spirit is exactly what’s needed. Cunningham emphasizes that competing at a higher league level is "crucial" for championship readiness, a point underscored by the fact that seven of Ulster's nine counties will reside in Division One or Two next season.

"Ulster is fiercely competitive with high-quality teams, and unfortunately, Antrim are at the lower end of that," Cunningham states, highlighting the unique challenge of the province. The gap is real, but so is the potential. As Antrim laces up for another campaign, the question isn't just about ending a winless streak—it's about rebuilding the foundation to compete with the best, a journey every athlete and fan understands begins with belief and relentless effort.
