Another Summer of LeBron Is Here

James is not under contract for next season.

Another summer of LeBron James is upon us, and the basketball world is holding its breath. After the Oklahoma City Thunder swept the Los Angeles Lakers 115-110 on Monday, eliminating L.A. from the playoffs, the 41-year-old superstar was asked about his future—and as usual, he left the door wide open.

"I don't know what the future holds for me," James told reporters, adding that he plans to "recalibrate with my family and talk with them, and spend some time with them" before making any decisions. It's a familiar refrain from a player who has floated retirement in recent years but always found his way back to the court.

This season marked James's eighth in Los Angeles—his longest continuous stretch with one team. But here's the twist: he's not under contract for next season. After picking up his $52.6 million player option last summer, he was not offered an extension, leaving his status as the Lakers' centerpiece uncertain. His agent, Rich Paul, told ESPN at the time that they were "watching the Lakers' moves" as the team looked to build around Luka Dončić. "We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future," Paul said in June 2025. "He wants to make every season he has left count."

The Lakers' roster is in flux beyond LeBron. Star guard Austin Reaves, who averaged a career-high 23.3 points per game despite playing just 51 games, is a free agent eligible for a five-year, $241 million extension. Key rotation players like Rui Hachimura, Jaxson Hayes, and Luke Kennard are also hitting the market, while Marcus Smart and DeAndre Ayton hold player options. With so many moving parts, James may wait to see how the league's landscape unfolds before committing.

Then there's the big question: will LeBron still command one of the NBA's highest salaries at age 41, or would he take a discount to join a title contender in Los Angeles or elsewhere? Even his son and teammate, Bronny James, has no answers. "I have no clue," Bronny said after Monday's loss. "He looks like he can play another..."

For now, the basketball world waits. Whether he returns to the Lakers, chases a ring elsewhere, or finally hangs up his sneakers, one thing is certain: another summer of LeBron is here, and it's going to be a wild ride.
