Giants unable to find their way home in 3-0 loss to Rays

The San Francisco Giants have been shut out again, marking their seventh blanking of the season—a staggering 22% of their 32 games played in 2026. That's not just a rough patch; it's a league-leading trend that's raising eyebrows across baseball.

To put this in perspective, the 2019 Miami Marlins were shut out 22 times over 162 games, the most in the Wild Card Era (roughly 14% of their schedule). Even the 1963 Mets, who lost 111 games, set the Live Ball era record with 30 shutouts—about 19% of their contests. The current Giants are on pace to shatter that mark by six shutouts. It's a sobering thought that seems to have hit Willy Adames and Rafael Devers simultaneously, captured in a moment of shared frustration.

The Giants' offense is leading the league in a less glamorous category: hitters slumped over the dugout railing after games, squinting at distant objects in the third deck as they peel off batting gloves and helmets following another fruitless frame. Against the Rays, they managed just six hits. Their only extra-base hit—a Luis Arraez double in the fourth—was erased when third base coach Hector Borg urged him to stretch it into a triple. Arraez was thrown out easily.

Borg might want to keep a low profile. He was overly cautious in Thursday's 10th inning, and here, overly aggressive. It's all connected: frustration, tight play, overthinking, and trying too hard—behaviors born from a team-wide slump.

San Francisco's only at-bat with a runner in scoring position came in the fifth inning against lefty Shane McClanahan. With runners at the corners and one out, the Giants saw just two pitches all game with a runner in scoring position: a slider in the dirt, followed by a change-up that Jerar Encarnacion rolled weakly to Junior Caminero for a 5-4-3 double play.

Then came the sixth inning, still down by two—a deficit that, in most ballparks, is hardly insurmountable. But for this Giants team, it felt like a mountain. The offense couldn't find its way home, and the shutout streak continues.
