The Los Angeles Angels dropped their second consecutive game to the Cleveland Guardians, falling 3-2 in a tightly contested pitchers' duel at Progressive Field. Despite another solid outing from starter Walbert Urena and yet another jaw-dropping home run robbery from Jo Adell, the Halos' offense couldn't quite muster enough firepower to complete the comeback.
From the first pitch, this game had the feel of a classic low-scoring battle. Urena got off to a strong start but ran into trouble in the second inning when Guardians infielder Angel Martinez launched a changeup over the right-field wall to give Cleveland a 1-0 lead. It was a rare mistake from Urena, who has been one of the more reliable arms in the Angels' rotation this season.
Cleveland starter Slade Cecconi matched Urena's intensity, tossing four shutout innings before giving way to reliever Hunter Gaddis. Through five frames, the Angels' bats were silent, unable to mount any serious threat against the Guardians' pitching staff.
The Guardians added to their lead in the fifth inning, but not without a spectacular defensive effort from Adell. After Daniel Schneeman drew a leadoff walk, Martinez looked poised to do more damage with a deep fly ball to right. But Adell, continuing his recent trend of highlight-reel catches, leaped at the wall to rob what would have been extra bases. The play saved at least one run, though Schneeman advanced to third on the sacrifice fly and later scored on a Patrick Bailey groundout to make it 2-0.
Urena exited after five innings, having thrown 91 pitches while allowing just three hits and striking out four. His lone walk proved costly, coming around to score Cleveland's second run. It wasn't his sharpest outing, but it was still a quality start that gave his team a chance to win.
The Angels finally broke through in the sixth inning. Oswald Peraza led off with a triple, and Adell followed with a sacrifice fly off reliever Tim Herrin to cut the deficit to 2-1. The momentum was short-lived, however, as Cleveland answered right back in the seventh. Rhys Hoskins walked, Martinez singled, and a throwing error by Peraza allowed Hoskins to reach third. Brayan Rocchio's sacrifice fly pushed the lead back to 3-1.
The Halos showed their fighting spirit in the eighth when Vaughn Grissom launched a solo home run off reliever Franco Aleman, trimming the lead to 3-2. But that was as close as they would get. Cleveland closer Cade Smith entered early to record the final out of the eighth and then shut the door in the ninth, sealing the Angels' second straight loss.
For Angels fans, the bright spots remain Urena's continued development and Adell's elite defensive instincts. But until the offense can string together timely hits, those silver linings will continue to come in losing efforts.
