Angels look to avoid series sweep against the Guardians

The Los Angeles Angels are staring down the barrel of a sweep as they face the Cleveland Guardians in the final game of a three-game series on Wednesday. With the Angels sitting at 16-27 (fourth in the AL West) and the Guardians leading the AL Central at 23-21, it's a clash of two teams heading in very different directions.

Reid Detmers (1-3, 4.33 ERA) will take the mound for Los Angeles, looking to stop the bleeding. The left-hander has 47 strikeouts this season but has struggled with consistency. Meanwhile, Cleveland counters with Parker Messick (4-1, 2.30 ERA), who has been dominant with 51 strikeouts and a WHIP under 1.00. The Guardians come in as heavy favorites (-153), with the over/under set at 7 runs.

Cleveland has been tough at home (12-9) and boasts the seventh-best on-base percentage in the American League (.322). The Angels, however, have struggled on the road (8-17) but have shown some pop at the plate, ranking seventh in the AL in slugging percentage (.388).

For the Guardians, Jose Ramirez continues to be the engine of the offense with six home runs and 16 RBIs, while David Fry has been red-hot over the last 10 games, hitting .318 with two homers. On the Angels' side, Mike Trout remains the star with 11 home runs and a .517 slugging percentage, and Jo Adell has provided a spark recently, going 12-for-35 with two homers in the last 10 games.

Both teams have been middling over their last 10 contests—Cleveland is 5-5, while Los Angeles is 4-6. The Guardians have been held back by a .202 batting average in that stretch, while the Angels have been outscored by 18 runs, pointing to pitching struggles.

Injury woes continue to plague both squads. The Guardians are without Shawn Armstrong (groin), Gabriel Arias (hamstring), and Andrew Walters (lat). The Angels have a longer list, including Travis d'Arnaud (foot), Logan O'Hoppe (wrist), and key arms like Grayson Rodriguez and Yusei Kikuchi on the IL.

As the Angels look to salvage the series, all eyes will be on Detmers to see if he can rise to the occasion against a surging Guardians lineup. For Cleveland, a sweep would be a statement win as they continue to build momentum in the AL Central race.
