Angels Hold Onto Last-Place Spot In Power Rankings; No More Hope To Go Around

A decade of stagnation and a basement-dwelling record have buried the Los Angeles Angels' postseason dreams. With a depleted roster and indifferent ownership, the Halos find themselves trapped in baseball's cellar.

For a brief moment this spring, the Los Angeles Angels dared their fans to dream again. But like a fastball caught too much of the plate, that hope was quickly sent over the fence and out of sight. Now, with a 16-26 record as we hit mid-May, the Halos find themselves firmly anchored at the bottom of MLB.com's latest power rankings—a spot they've held for two consecutive weeks.

It's not the worst record in baseball, but the feeling around Anaheim is something far worse than a simple losing streak. It's a sense of inevitability. While the Angels share last place in the American League West with the Houston Astros, the Astros are ranked four spots higher. Why? Because Houston still has something the Halos have completely run out of: hope.

Across the league, even struggling teams have a glimmer of optimism. The New York Mets have the star power to turn things around. The Astros, perennial contenders, seem destined to climb out of the cellar at some point. The Angels? Not so much. A decade of stagnation has turned losing into a culture, and the numbers paint a grim picture: no winning season since 2015, and just one postseason appearance (a 2014 ALDS sweep) since 2010.

The offseason brought changes, most notably handing the managerial reins to former catcher Kurt Suzuki. But in many ways, the deck was stacked against him from the start. With a depleted roster and an ownership group that has shown little urgency to change course, the Halos are trapped in a cycle that feels all too familiar.

For Angels fans, the gear in your closet might be the only thing worth cheering for this season. Because as long as this team stays mired in last place, the only hope left is for next year—and that's a promise that's been broken for over a decade.
