NEW YORK — It was the worst of times, and then it was the best of times for Ryan Weathers, who logged a bizarre start in the Yankees’ 7-1 loss to the Angels on Tuesday night. Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium was a tale of two extremes for Angels starter Ryan Weathers, whose bizarre outing ultimately led to a 7-1 victory for Los Angeles. The left-hander authored a head-scratching line, tying a season-high for the Yankees' staff with 10 strikeouts over five innings, but also setting an unwanted mark by surrendering four solo home runs.

The Angels' power display started early and set the tone. In a devastating first-inning sequence, Mike Trout, Jo Adell, and Jorge Soler launched back-to-back-to-back solo shots off Weathers' four-seam fastball, which was noticeably down in velocity. Despite settling in for two scoreless frames, Weathers was tagged again in the fourth by former Yankee Oswald Peraza, who connected for another solo homer.

While Weathers generated plenty of swings and misses with his change-up and slider, the damage was done. He became the first pitcher in Yankees history to allow at least four homers while also recording at least 10 strikeouts in a game. The Angels would add a fifth solo blast in the eighth inning off reliever Yerry De los Santos, courtesy of Yoán Moncada, who also delivered a key two-run single earlier.

On the other side, Angels lefty Reid Detmers was masterful in contrast. He nearly matched Weathers' strikeout total with nine of his own over seven brilliant innings, allowing just one run on four hits and, crucially, zero walks. His performance completely stifled a Yankees lineup that had erupted for 11 runs the night before but has struggled for consistency.

The win was a decisive statement for the Angels, built entirely on the long ball, while the Yankees' pitching staff, which had only allowed five homers in its first 16 games, saw that total matched in a single night.
