Tuesday night's game between the Los Angeles Angels and Atlanta Braves took a fiery turn, erupting into a full-scale bench-clearing brawl that has now resulted in significant suspensions. The incident centered on veteran Angels outfielder Jorge Soler and Braves pitcher Reynaldo López, adding a dramatic chapter to their long-standing personal rivalry.
The tension had been building since Soler launched a two-run homer off López in his first at-bat. History shows Soler has owned the matchup, boasting a staggering 14-for-23 record with five home runs against the right-hander. When López then hit Soler with a pitch in his second plate appearance, the stage was set for a fifth-inning explosion.
After López threw another pitch high and inside, Soler immediately charged the mound, leading to a chaotic scene where both players exchanged blows. "I asked him if everything was OK and the answer he gave me, I didn’t like it," Soler explained post-game, justifying his reaction. Braves personnel tackled Soler, while Angels superstar Mike Trout was notably involved in pulling López away from the fray.
The aftermath saw strong opinions from both sides. Angels manager Kurt Suzuki vehemently defended his player, stating, "You get thrown at your head, you have a family, a career. It’s dangerous." López, however, maintained his innocence, saying, "On my part, there was never any intent to hit him at any point."
Major League Baseball swiftly handed down seven-game suspensions to both Soler and López on Wednesday, with both players appealing the decision. For the Angels, losing Soler—who has started every game this season as their primary DH—is a major blow to their lineup and offensive production.
