Every athlete knows that a season can turn on a single pitch. For Angels' ace Yusei Kikuchi, that moment came during a recent start against the Chicago White Sox, when he had to remove himself from the game after just a few warm-up pitches before the third inning. Now, the Japanese left-hander is facing an extended break from the mound.

The 34-year-old has been placed on the 15-day injured list, but the timeline for his return is significantly longer. According to Angels' head coach Kurt Suzuki, Kikuchi will be shut down from all throwing activities for three to four weeks. "All I was told was, we're gonna shut them down for 3-4 weeks of no throwing," Suzuki told reporters. "And then we're gonna rehab and build him back up." The good news? The injury will not require surgery.

This is a tough blow for both Kikuchi and the Angels. Last season was a career highlight for the veteran, who earned his second All-Star selection (his first came with the Mariners in 2021). He finished the year with a solid 3.99 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP, while striking out an impressive 9.2 batters per nine innings. His performance gave the Angels rotation a reliable, experienced arm.

However, the 2026 campaign has been a struggle. Through seven starts, Kikuchi is still searching for his first win, posting an 0-3 record with a 5.81 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP. While those numbers are a far cry from last year's form, his track record suggests he has the ability to bounce back once healthy.

For now, the Angels will have to navigate a crucial stretch of the season without one of their key arms. Kikuchi's focus will be on rest and rehabilitation, hoping to build back up for a strong second half. As any pitcher knows, the road back starts with patience—and the right recovery plan.
