Rafael Jodar has been in great form on clay this season, winning 11 of the 12 matches he’s played.
With Carlos Alcaraz missing from the tournament in Madrid, Jodar has stepped up as the main hope for Spanish tennis fans.
The 19-year-old has already beaten Alex de Minaur and Joao Fonseca, earning his spot in the fourth round of the Madrid Open.
Andy Roddick has taken notice of Jodar’s recent run but offered a bit of caution ahead of his trip to Paris next month. The former world number one said:
During the latest episode of ‘Served with Andy Roddick’, the American looked ahead to Roland Garros.
“Don’t everyone go crazy if [Rafael] Jodar loses a tough five-setter at Roland Garros.
“You don’t get anointed, you have to earn your place.“
Roddick isn’t getting ahead of himself, even if he does think highly of the world number 42.
“Thank goodness there is finally a good player from Spain!” said Roddick.
Jodar’s victory over De Minaur was an impressive feat. Not many players can come close to the Australian’s work rate and consistency on the court, but Jodar managed to do just that in Madrid.
The young Spaniard showcased his ability early in his career, outlasting De Minaur in a three-set battle that ended 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. The win highlighted his stamina and skill against one of the most relentless players on tour.
Jodar is set to face Vit Kopriva of Czechia in the fourth round of the Madrid Open.
Kopriva, currently ranked 66th in the world, is still looking for his first tour-level title at age 28.
The Spaniard will walk onto the court as a strong favourite, but it remains to be seen how he copes with those expectations.
The match is scheduled for Tuesday, April 28, with a quarter-final spot on the line.
