The fifth-round pick caught Reid's eye at this weekend's rookie minicamp.

The Kansas City Chiefs may have found a hidden gem in the later rounds of this year's draft. While the team focused heavily on bolstering their defense early on, fifth-round running back Emmett Johnson is already turning heads—and drawing a comparison to a former star.

At the Chiefs' rookie minicamp over the weekend, head coach Andy Reid couldn't hide his excitement about the young back. Reid noted that Johnson has the potential to make an immediate impact on special teams, but it's his offensive skill set that has sparked a particularly intriguing comparison. "He's got that lateral quickness," Reid said. "We had LeSean McCoy here for a bit, and he has a little bit of that to him—where he can shift gears and still get himself up the field quickly."

For those who remember McCoy's electric days in Philadelphia, that's high praise. Reid elaborated on Johnson's versatility, highlighting his ability to catch the ball, pass protect, and run effectively. "It's important in this offense that you're able to catch the ball. You've got to be able to block, and he showed that. At the same time, you have to be able to run the ball. The more you can do, we'll utilize you in those areas, and it puts pressure on the defense."

Of course, a non-contact rookie minicamp is a far cry from the intensity of NFL Sundays. But for a late-round pick, earning that kind of endorsement from a legendary coach like Reid is a massive first step. Johnson will now compete with Kenneth Walker, Emari Demercado, and Brashard Smith for a role in Kansas City's backfield. If he can bring even a fraction of McCoy's magic to the field, Chiefs fans might have a new favorite player to watch—and a new jersey to add to their collection.
