Andy Murray, the three-time Grand Slam champion has been a lifelong Hibernian fan.
The former world number one began supporting the Scottish football club because of his grandfather; as did the rest of his family.
Hibernian’s great rivals, Hearts of Midlothian FC, are currently leading the Scottish Premiership title race.
With six games to go, Hearts are on 70 points and top of the Scottish Premier League – one point ahead of Rangers in second place.
As a Hibernian fan, one might expect Murray to be rooting against Hearts during the title run-in.
No team other than Celtic or Rangers has won the Scottish Premiership since Aberdeen in 1986.
For this reason, Andy Murray believes Hearts winning the Scottish Premier League would be good for Scottish football.
“I’ll probably get hammered for this, but I personally think it is a good thing for Scottish football if Hearts were able to win [the title],” Murray said during an interview with Sky Sports.
“Obviously, as a Hibs fan, there’s obviously a huge rivalry there but it’s been such a long time since it’s been… I think 80s maybe? [since non Rangers/Celtic title winner].
“People are asking me a lot about Scottish football and that never really happens. So there’s obviously a lot of interest in it.
“I think for Scottish football on the whole, it would be a good thing, but for the Hibs/Hearts rivalry, it would be disappointing.”
Hibernian have the opportunity to damage Hearts’ title ambitions this weekend when the two clubs play each other at the East Road Stadium.
Despite Murray’s previous comments, the Scot is hoping for a Hibernian victory on Sunday.
“That’s Hibs’ chance to dent their hopes so I hope Hibs win that match, obviously,” Murray said.
In 2012, Murray revealed the reasons behind his support for Hibernian during an interview with football magazine 442.
“Most of my friends are Rangers or Celtic fans,” Murray said, as per the Daily Record.
“There have never been such high expectations at Hibs, I guess, so at least we don’t feel like we’re being let down.”
“My whole family support Hibs because of my grandfather.
“Me and my brother started going to games when we were 13 or 14.”
Hibernian are currently fifth in the Scottish Premier League table, trailing Hearts, Rangers, Celtic and Motherwell.
