Manchester United are set to prioritize signing a left winger this summer, as the club faces a glaring gap in its attacking options. With Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, and Alejandro Garnacho all on the roster, the Red Devils currently lack a natural left-sided winger—a risk that INEOS is keen to address.
While the need is clear, the transfer market is crowded with high-profile targets. Many of the wingers linked to Old Trafford come with hefty price tags or face fierce competition from other top clubs. That means INEOS must be strategic, seeking a player who offers value without breaking the bank.
Enter Ander Barrenetxea. According to Spanish outlet Marca, both Chelsea and Manchester United have closely monitored the Real Sociedad attacker's progress this season. "These clubs have little hesitation in spending a significant amount of money, and Barrenetxea is a player who fits the bill for their new projects ahead of next season," the report states.
At 24 years old, Barrenetxea is a versatile, right-footed winger who primarily operates on the left, cutting inside with flair. Known for his technical dribbling, explosive acceleration, and high-energy pressing, he's the kind of player who thrives in 1v1 situations. While his numbers—three goals and five assists in 29 La Liga games this season—aren't yet eye-catching, his performances suggest a breakout is imminent.
Valued at €20.2 million (£17m) by Transfermarkt, Barrenetxea also has a reported €75 million (£65m) release clause. However, it's unlikely Real Sociedad will hold out for that sum. With Chelsea also in the mix, the Spanish club could still command a decent fee—just not the exorbitant amounts being demanded for other targets like Yan Diomande or Ilman Ndiaye.
For United, Barrenetxea represents a shrewd investment: a natural left winger with room to grow, at a price that won't derail their summer plans. As the transfer window heats up, this is one name to watch.
