The Washington Commanders have made one thing crystal clear this offseason: they're all about speed. General manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn have engineered a defensive overhaul that has fans buzzing, and according to CBS Sports' Zachary Pereles, one word perfectly sums up the team's strategy—"speed."
The centerpiece of this transformation is rookie standout Sonny Styles, whose blazing 40-yard dash has drawn comparisons to elite playmakers like CeeDee Lamb and Kyle Hamilton. But the Commanders didn't stop there. In free agency, they added a trio of game-changers: edge rushers Odafe Oweh and K'Lavon Chaisson, plus linebacker Leo Chenal. Safety Nick Cross rounds out a unit that has gotten faster, more athletic, and more formidable at every level of the defense.
"It's hard to watch Styles' 40-yard dash overlay and not think speed," Pereles noted. "But it wasn't just Styles. Oweh and Chaisson bring speed to the edge rush, Chenal brings it to the linebacking room, and Cross adds athleticism in the secondary. The Commanders got better across all three levels."
For fans, this defensive makeover inspires confidence heading into the 2026 season. The unit that desperately needed a jolt now looks ready to disrupt offenses with relentless pace and pressure.
However, the picture isn't as clear on offense. Beyond star wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who can quarterback Jayden Daniels rely on? Names like Luke McCaffrey, Antonio Williams, Treylon Burks, and Jacory Croskey-Merritt are on the roster, but they remain largely unproven. That's a lot of question marks for a team hoping to keep defenses honest.
Inside the building, optimism runs high for this group. But the reality is that opponents will likely double-team McLaurin and dare someone else to step up. Daniels needs more weapons, plain and simple. There's still time before the season kicks off, and the Commanders would be wise to add another reliable target to the mix. Speed on defense is great—but balance wins championships.
