Analysis: Villa's league woes continue

Over the past nine games Villa's league form (eight points) would see them in the relegation zone - a run that has put their Champions League position into some doubt. Win that and Villa would be in the Champions League anyway - but they will want to do it through the Premier League. Boss Unai Emery only made three changes from that win over Forest, but Villa did not come near to replicating that performance.

Villa's recent league form has been a cause for concern. Over the last nine games, they've managed just eight points—a run that would place them in the relegation zone. This slump has cast doubt on their ability to secure a Champions League spot through the Premier League, especially after such a promising season.

Just days ago, Villa were flying high after a dominant 4-0 win over Nottingham Forest in the Europa League semi-final second leg. That victory set up an Istanbul final against Freiburg, and winning that would guarantee Champions League football. But boss Unai Emery made it clear he wants to earn that spot the hard way—through league performance.

Emery made only three changes from that impressive Forest win, but the team failed to replicate their midweek magic. Despite creating several chances, Villa also rode their luck, nearly falling 2-0 behind early on.

Ollie Watkins thought he'd leveled the score with a header into an empty net from Morgan Rogers' cross, but VAR ruled it out for offside. Ross Barkley did manage to equalize with a fine glancing header from a John McGinn corner, bringing some hope back to the Villa Park faithful.

When Watkins controlled Emiliano Martinez's long ball on his shoulder, turned past two defenders, and beat the onrushing goalkeeper to make it 2-1, it felt like Villa had turned the corner. But Matty Cash's costly loss of possession on the right wing was punished by the Clarets, leaving Villa to settle for a draw they might feel they should have avoided.

Now, Villa's fate hangs in the balance. They'll need Bournemouth and Brighton to drop points, or they'll have to dig deep and take something from tough upcoming matches against Liverpool and Manchester City to secure that top-five finish. With their Champions League dreams on the line, every game is now a must-win.
