May 8—MITCHELL — The regular season is winding down in the South Dakota High School Baseball Association's Class A schedule, and a critical final weekend awaits. The top-five teams in the seed-point standings are separated by 1.1 points, nearly all of them with 13 or 14 wins and only a handful of losses. That makes every game count, with the regular season ending on Sunday, May 10, and the ...

The regular season is coming to a thrilling close in South Dakota's Class A high school baseball, and this final weekend is shaping up to be one for the books. With the top five teams in the seed-point standings separated by just 1.1 points, every at-bat and every pitch matters more than ever.

As of Friday, May 8, Brandon Valley holds the No. 1 spot, but it's a razor-thin margin. The Lynx have been on fire, winning six of their last eight games, including a crucial doubleheader sweep against Yankton on May 1 that boosted their standing. They lead Harrisburg by a mere .037 points, and these two powerhouses have been trading the top spot all week. Brandon Valley closes out against two-win Huron on Saturday, while Harrisburg faces Mitchell on Friday—both games that could shift the standings in an instant.

The real drama, however, lies just behind them. No. 3 Sioux Falls Jefferson (14-5), No. 4 Yankton (14-4), and No. 5 Rapid City Stevens (14-4) are all separated by less than three-tenths of a point. It's a logjam that has baseball fans buzzing. Each of these teams has a win over one another, adding layers of intrigue. Stevens' signature victory came against Sioux Falls Jefferson on April 25, while the Cavaliers have since rattled off six straight wins and head to Pierre on Saturday to close their regular season.

Yankton started the season with an 8-0 run against Class A opponents, but their lone matchup with Sioux Falls Jefferson was washed out. Their only losses have come against Mitchell, O'Gorman, and a tough doubleheader sweep by Brandon Valley. Meanwhile, Rapid City Stevens has been a model of consistency, with three separate four-game win streaks and wins in eight of their last 10 games heading into a Sunday matchup with Douglas.

South Dakota's high school baseball uses a power-point seeding system similar to other sports in the state, awarding points based on opponents' winning percentages. Only games against fellow Class A teams count, and teams must face at least eight different Class A opponents and play 12 games to be eligible for postseason seeding. It's a system that rewards strength of schedule and makes every game a battle.

Rounding out the top eight are No. 6 O'Gorman (14-7), No. 7 Pierre (16-6), and No. 8 Watertown (6-7). Just outside the cut line, No. 9 Sioux Falls Lincoln (12-9), No. 10 Sioux Falls Roosevelt (6-12), and No. 11 Mitchell (9-9) are preparing for road trips in the best-of-three state-qualifying round next week. Only eight of those series winners will advance to the state tournament, setting the stage for a postseason full of high-stakes action.

Whether you're a player, coach, or fan, this is the kind of finish that makes high school baseball unforgettable. Stay tuned—the best is yet to come.
