The NCAA Men's Hockey transfer portal opened with a bang this week, and the Minnesota Golden Gophers were right in the thick of the action. With a new coach at the helm, roster turnover was expected, and the first 24 hours delivered just that. The Gophers saw a significant exodus, with seven players total now seeking opportunities elsewhere, while simultaneously welcoming five new faces to the program for the 2026-27 campaign. As the portal remains open, more movement could be on the horizon for the Maroon and Gold.
Leading the departures is goaltender Nathan Airey, a grad transfer who entered the portal in late March. After being supplanted as the starter by Michigan State transfer Luca DiPasquo mid-season, Airey will look for a program where he can be the undisputed number one in his final year of eligibility.
The forward corps also took a hit. Junior Jimmy Clark, a 2023 Minnesota Wild draft pick, is heading to Big Ten rival Michigan State after his production dipped slightly this past season. Hopes were high for the Edina native, but he never quite reached the offensive ceiling many projected.
He's not the only forward seeking a fresh start. Sophomore Noah Pahlsson, who arrived with considerable hype from Sweden, also failed to make the anticipated leap in his second year. His search for a bigger role will continue within the conference, as he's set to join the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Perhaps the most significant loss comes on the blue line. Defenseman Max Gruba, a player the program had "super high hopes for" after his stellar USHL season, is also exploring his options. His departure leaves a notable gap in Minnesota's defensive core that the coaching staff will need to address.
While saying goodbye to key players is tough, the Gophers have been active in replenishing the roster. The five incoming transfers signal a clear intent to retool quickly and remain competitive in the fierce Big Ten landscape. This kind of rapid roster remake is becoming the new norm in college hockey, and Minnesota is navigating it head-on. For Gopher fans, it's a time of transition, but also one of new possibilities as the team builds its identity for the future.
