In a game that felt like a painful case of déjà vu, American Heritage-Delray's girls lacrosse team saw their championship dreams slip away once again. The Stallions fell to Lake Highland Prep 6-5 in the Class 1A state title rematch, a scoreline that eerily mirrored last year's heartbreaking loss to the same opponent.
The stage was set in Naples for a dramatic showdown, and the Stallions delivered on the drama—just not the ending they hoped for. Trailing 5-2 entering the fourth quarter, Heritage mounted a furious rally. Ava Drew sparked the comeback with a clutch goal, knotting the game at 5-5 with under six minutes remaining. The Heritage crowd erupted, sensing a shift in momentum as the Stallions regained possession.
But that go-ahead goal never came. Lake Highland Prep methodically drained the clock in the final two minutes, then struck with surgical precision. Giselle Jasciewicz buried the game-winner with just 20 seconds left, silencing the Heritage faithful and sealing the Highlanders' repeat title.
The game started with promise for Heritage, as Madison Vargas opened the scoring. But Lake Highland Prep answered quickly, with Jasciewicz and Katherine D'Avanzo firing back-to-back goals. A dagger came with just 0.8 seconds left in the first quarter, when the Highlanders slipped a third goal past Maryland commit Ashley Egbert.
Hali Horvath cut the deficit to one before halftime, but the third quarter proved frustrating for Heritage. Highlanders goalkeeper Sinthya Quiroz stood tall, turning away shot after shot and keeping the Stallions at bay. Heritage finally broke through in the fourth, scoring three unanswered goals to tie the game—but the sixth goal remained agonizingly out of reach.
For the second straight year, top-seeded Heritage had to rally from behind, and for the second straight year, the comeback fell just short. It's a tough ending for a program that will graduate nine seniors, many of whom are headed to play Division I lacrosse. Their legacy, however, is one of relentless fight and championship heart—qualities that will surely carry them far beyond this field.
