For most participants, just getting to the finish line of the 10-miler signifies victory. But one Philadelphia woman has a loftier goal: winning the race for the third year in a row.

For thousands of runners, crossing the finish line of the 10-mile Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run is the ultimate achievement. But for Amber Zimmerman, the goal is different: she's aiming for a historic three-peat.

While most of Philadelphia sleeps, Zimmerman is already logging miles, driven by a deep-seated passion. "I just don't feel right if I don't run," she says. "It's a habit I've built over so long, and once you have that, you can't really stop." Her daily regimen is a testament to her dedication, often covering 10-15 miles before many have had their first coffee.

That discipline has paid off with back-to-back victories in this iconic Philly race. Zimmerman calls the 10-mile distance her favorite and praises the Broad Street Run's unique course. "It's a straight shot. You get to run past City Hall... The crowd is amazing," she notes, highlighting the electric atmosphere that defines the event.

As she prepares to defend her title on May 3rd, Zimmerman offers crucial advice for newcomers, emphasizing smart training over sheer volume. "It's better to be a little undertrained and not injured going into this race," she advises, pointing out the deceptive challenge of the course's fast downhill start.

A scientist at the University of Pennsylvania, Zimmerman has fully embraced Philadelphia's vibrant running community during her five years in the city. She highlights the constant opportunities for competition, from local 5Ks to major marathons, that make it a hub for dedicated athletes. "There's a ton of competitive people here. It's a great place to actually get some good fields," she says.

Now, with race day approaching, all eyes are on Zimmerman as she gears up for another shot at the podium, not just to run, but to make history with a third consecutive win.
