AM Racing formally closes NASCAR operation

The NASCAR O'Reilly team will not return to competition

It's a tough day in the NASCAR garage as AM Racing has officially closed its doors for good. The team, which competed in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series, had been silent since pulling out of the Rockingham race back in late March, but now it's confirmed: the operation is shut down.

According to Motorsport.com Senior NASCAR correspondent Matt Weaver, Vice President of Competition Matthew Lucas broke the news to employees, telling them they were being released from their duties. Lucas admitted he made a serious effort to keep the team afloat, but unfortunately, it just wasn't enough.

This is a particularly hard blow given the team's recent success. Just last season, AM Racing made the playoffs with driver Harrison Burton, finishing 12th in the driver standings with two top-five finishes and ten top-tens. They had big plans for 2025, too, fielding the No. 25 Ford Mustang full-time with Nick Sanchez behind the wheel. Sanchez was sitting 25th in points when they withdrew from Rockingham, with a best finish of third in the first seven races of the season—a promising start that now feels like a distant memory.

The team had also entered a second car, the No. 52 Ford, in three early-season races with Daniel Dye driving. Interestingly, Dye had hoped to continue racing with AMR after being released from the Kaulig Racing Truck team. Meanwhile, Sanchez reportedly met with Team Penske about potential opportunities, but nothing came of those talks either.

Behind the scenes, AM Racing had been working on a deal to sell its assets to Sigma Performance Services ahead of the 2026 season. That agreement fell apart just before the new season got underway, setting the stage for this unfortunate outcome.

For fans of the sport, it's a reminder of how quickly things can change in NASCAR. Just last year, AM Racing was celebrating a playoff run. Now, the haulers are parked for good.
