Alvin Kamara has been a fixture in New Orleans for nine seasons, but as the 2026 season approaches, the five-time Pro Bowler's future with the Saints is suddenly uncertain. The 30-year-old running back wants to stay, but the team's recent moves suggest they might be ready to turn the page.

Kamara broke his silence this week on "The Set" podcast with Terron Armstead, offering his first public reaction to the Saints' surprising free-agent signing of Travis Etienne Jr. in March. The four-year, $48 million deal made Etienne one of the NFL's 10 highest-paid running backs — a clear signal that New Orleans is investing heavily in its backfield future.

"I watched [Etienne] in Jacksonville these past couple years," Kamara said. "He's explosive, he hit home runs. He did it in college. Strong dude, seems smart. I'm excited to see what we can do together."

That last sentence is the key. Kamara envisions a partnership, not a competition. He made clear there's no "beef" between the two backs and even expressed happiness that Etienne landed a big contract. It's a classy response from a veteran who could easily feel threatened by the arrival of a younger, well-compensated back.

But the Saints' front office has sent mixed signals. Etienne's deal — which sits just behind Kamara's two-year, $24.5 million extension signed in October 2024 — raises real questions about roster construction and salary cap management. Why invest so heavily in two running backs when the team has other needs?

For now, Kamara remains committed to New Orleans. Whether the Saints feel the same way is the lingering question. With training camp on the horizon, this backfield drama is one to watch closely.
