College basketball's transfer portal is buzzing, and a former local standout has found his new home. Alter High School graduate RJ Greer is taking his talents to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro for his sophomore season.
The 6-foot-3 guard announced his decision just 13 days after entering the portal following his freshman year with the Davidson Wildcats. In 17 appearances, Greer averaged 3.7 points, looking to carve out a larger role with a fresh start.
Greer's journey has already seen a significant pivot; he was originally committed to North Carolina State before a coaching change sent him to Davidson. Now, he joins a UNCG program itself in the midst of a major transition within the Southern Conference.
The Spartans are coming off a 13-19 season that ended a run of three consecutive 20-win campaigns. This led to a coaching change, with veteran Mike Jones departing after five seasons. In the wake of that move, a significant 11 UNCG players entered the transfer portal, signaling a full roster rebuild.
Leading that new era is Jerod Haase, hired on March 18. Haase brings head coaching experience from UAB and Stanford, tasked with returning the Spartans to the heights they last saw in 2021—their most recent NCAA Tournament appearance under former coach Wes Miller. For a player like Greer, this period of change presents a prime opportunity to make an immediate impact and help shape a new chapter for Spartan basketball.
