Millsap High School's Grayson Hunkapiller, the All-Weatherford Democrat Offensive Lineman of the Year, has officially taken his talents to the next level, signing with McMurry University. The standout lineman put pen to paper Friday morning, joining a proud legacy of Bulldogs moving on to collegiate football.
For Hunkapiller, the signing is about more than just his own future. "I’ve known a lot of guys from previous years, especially from my childhood, that have signed," he said. "It’s an honor to be in that conversation with them and to carry on that legacy for coach [Jacob] Johnson and this program."
His senior season was a masterclass in trench dominance, as he led all linemen in Parker and Palo Pinto Counties with a staggering 96 pancake blocks. While the team's record had its challenges, Hunkapiller believes the Bulldogs succeeded in building a foundation. "Every game, I went in and did my best. It got me the [team] MVP... There were a few lows for sure, but being there with coach Johnson and the group of guys we had, the love we had for each other, that carried us through."
The decision to become a McMurry War Hawk was an easy one. The program was his first offer, and the connection was instant. "They know how to win and I’m excited to be included in that," Hunkapiller noted, citing the trust built with both his high school coaches and McMurry Head Coach Jordan Neal.
Beyond the gridiron, Hunkapiller plans to follow a path of service, aiming to pursue a career in education with a focus on special education, following in his father's footsteps. It's a fitting next chapter for a player who has already shown immense dedication and leadership on the field.
