Missouri Tigers fans can breathe a collective sigh of relief. All-American running back Ahmad Hardy has been discharged from a Mississippi hospital following a weekend shooting and is now heading back to Columbia to begin his recovery. The big question on everyone's mind: will he be back on the field this season?

The 20-year-old standout, a finalist for the prestigious Doak Walker Award, was shot in the upper leg while attending an outdoor concert at a bike club in Laurel, Mississippi—about 90 minutes from his hometown of Oma. The school confirmed early Sunday that Hardy was in stable condition, and police later described the incident as a "melee" that left at least two people injured. Three persons of interest have been taken into custody.

Tigers head coach Eli Drinkwitz addressed the situation Tuesday night during an event in Dallas, offering a cautiously optimistic update. "We'll take it day by day," Drinkwitz said. "He will be back healthy. But when you're dealing with elite athletes, getting back to elite status is a little tricky in these situations. There is an opportunity he could be back this year, and an opportunity he couldn't be. We won't know those answers for a few weeks."

Hardy's journey to stardom has been anything but ordinary. After a breakout freshman season at Louisiana-Monroe—where he rushed for over 1,300 yards and 13 touchdowns—he transferred to Missouri and immediately became one of the most electric backs in college football. Last season, he ranked second in the entire Football Bowl Subdivision with 1,649 rushing yards and added 16 touchdowns, leading the Tigers to an 8-5 record and a Gator Bowl appearance against Virginia.

His signature performance came last November against Mississippi State, when he torched the Bulldogs for 300 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries. That historic outing placed him in elite company, joining Devin West as the only players in Missouri history to crack the 300-yard rushing mark in a single game. He also posted a 250-yard game against Louisiana, proving he could dominate any defense on any given Saturday.

As Hardy begins his road to recovery, the entire Missouri community—and college football fans everywhere—will be watching closely. For now, the message is simple: one day at a time, and plenty of heart.
