Every athlete knows that failure is part of the journey, but for Alief Taylor High School senior McKale Lee, a devastating fall became the fuel for an incredible comeback.

"Last year, I fell flat on my face in the area meet on the back straight, the first 200 meters," Lee recalls. That stumble wasn't just a misstep—it ended her season and crushed her dreams of competing at the state level. But instead of letting that moment define her, she used it as motivation.

Fast forward to this season, and Lee has done more than just bounce back. She's now the number one 800-meter runner in the state, dominating the competition with a combination of grit and grace. Her hard work paid off at the regional meet, where she qualified for both the mile and half-mile events, punching her ticket to the state championships.

"If you fall seven times, get back up eight times," Lee says with a smile. Her philosophy is simple but powerful: "It takes serious concentration. It takes dedication. It takes losing, it takes gaining. It takes showing up every single day. Showing up."

This year, Lee's mindset has been her secret weapon. "This year, just showing up, giving it my all, remembering I'm capable, has helped me push me to be where I am today," she explains. And where she is today is at the top of her game, way out in front of her competition.

Now, as she prepares to head to the state track meet in Austin next weekend, Lee is all smiles. "I'm going to state for the first time ever. I'm just really excited. I'm really proud of myself."

Her story is a powerful reminder that setbacks can be setups for greatness—and that the right mindset, paired with relentless effort, can turn a fall into a victory lap.
