The WTA Tour has turned its attention to the clay-court swing, but Alexandra Eala is already looking ahead to grass. For now, though, her focus remains on the clay.

As the WTA Tour shifts its focus to the clay-court swing, rising star Alexandra Eala is already setting her sights on the grass—but for now, her feet are firmly planted on the red dirt. Currently competing at the Italian Open in Rome, the 20-year-old Filipina is using the tournament as a key tune-up for Roland Garros later this month, marking her second Grand Slam appearance of 2026 after a first-round exit at the Australian Open earlier this year.

With a packed calendar ahead—Wimbledon following Paris, then the US Open closing out the season—Eala is eager to find her rhythm on clay. Yet, she's already made an early commitment to the grass-court season, signaling her ambitions for a strong summer run.

The Birmingham Open, a WTA 125 event running from June 1-7, has released its entry list with Eala's name prominently featured. At the time of entry, she was ranked 42nd in the world, making her the second-highest seed behind top seed Janice Tjen. The tournament will also feature a competitive field, including Alycia Parks, Tatjana Maria, Antonia Ruzic, Talia Gibson, and Beatriz Haddad Maia, among others. As an early lead-up to Wimbledon—scheduled from June 29 to July 12—Birmingham offers Eala a crucial opportunity to build momentum on grass.

Unsurprisingly, Eala's participation has already generated significant excitement. The young star continues to draw attention wherever she plays, both in person and from fans watching from afar. Her rise to prominence was fueled by a breakout 2025 season, highlighted by an impressive semifinal run at the Miami Open as a wildcard entry. On grass, she showed flashes of brilliance that year, starting with the same Birmingham event. Though she lost her opening match there, she bounced back with a quarterfinal appearance at the Ilkley Open, followed by two qualifying wins in Nottingham before falling in her first main draw match. Her best performance came at Eastbourne, where she came through qualifying and reached the final, ultimately losing to fellow rising talent Maya Joint.

Despite that strong run, Eala faced a tough draw at Wimbledon, falling to Barbora Krejcikova in the first round. Now, with a year of experience under her belt and a growing confidence on grass, she'll be looking to make a deeper run in 2026. Whether she's honing her game on clay or preparing for the quick surface of grass, Eala's journey is one to watch—and one that promises plenty of excitement for tennis fans and sports enthusiasts alike.
