Alex Palou has been dominating the IndyCar Series since joining Chip Ganassi Racing in 2021, and with that success comes a new sound from the stands: boos. The four-time and reigning IndyCar champion, who has claimed 22 race wins including his first oval victory at last year's Indianapolis 500, heard the crowd's disapproval for the first time during the parade lap at last weekend's Sonsio Grand Prix on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.

"It was the first time that I heard boos from multiple sections," said the 29-year-old Spaniard. "I think until now it's been very friendly, and now it's getting more towards boos."

Rather than being discouraged, Palou embraces the reaction. "I think it's good—you need to have that. We're getting booed for being successful, then we're doing the right thing," he added with confidence.

The tension isn't just coming from the grandstands. Recent press conferences have hinted at growing restlessness among his rivals. At Long Beach last month, Andretti Global's Kyle Kirkwood suggested Palou had an "indicator" because most Chip Ganassi Racing and its technical alliance affiliate Meyer Shank Racing cars used push-to-pass on the final restart. IndyCar has since updated the rules to allow push-to-pass on restarts. That exchange followed another playful back-and-forth with Arrow McLaren's Pato O'Ward.

When asked if he senses a similar shift in attitude from his competitors, Palou replied, "Probably. But it's good. I like it, in a way."

"Obviously I would love everybody to cheer for AP and the #10 car, and CGR, but you can't have that. You need to have your favorite drivers and different preferences. So, I love that we're getting some heat. It's good heat. It's never been any bad."

For fans of the sport, this is the kind of rivalry and edge that makes IndyCar racing so compelling. Whether you're cheering for the champion or hoping to see him dethroned, one thing is clear: Alex Palou is thriving under the pressure.
