Aldershot Town owner Deane Wood has issued a stark warning, revealing the National League club is bracing for significant financial turbulence in the near future. Having taken ownership just three months ago, Wood is now confronting the harsh reality of the club's finances, forecasting losses between £600,000 and £800,000 this season.
The financial strain is already impacting the football side, with Wood confirming the playing budget will be slashed by £200,000 for next season—a reduction to roughly 85% of its current level. This will force tough decisions this summer for manager John Coleman regarding the squad's future, adding another layer of challenge for a team currently sitting 19th in the table.
Despite receiving advice to place the club into administration, Wood ruled it out due to his loyalty to the local community. Instead, he is focusing on innovative cost-saving and revenue-generating measures. This includes maximizing the use of the stadium beyond matchdays and implementing practical savings, like managing a monthly electricity bill that runs to £4,500.
While Wood believes Aldershot will avoid relegation this season, he admits it has been a close call, stating "our luck has to run out." The coming months will be a critical test of the club's resilience, both on the pitch and in its business operations, as it seeks a sustainable path forward from this period of financial difficulty.
