TalkSport host and former Scotland striker Alan Brazil has shared a heartfelt health update with fans, revealing he recently underwent a "life-saving operation" and is now focused on recovery. The 66-year-old, who has been absent from the airwaves for several weeks, broke his silence on social media Monday morning, offering reassurance to listeners who've been wondering about his whereabouts.
"Some of you will have noticed that I've not been around," Brazil wrote. "I recently had a life-saving operation and I'm deeply grateful to the brilliant medical team who have looked after me." The former Ipswich Town star added that it will be "some time yet" before he's fully back to his old self, but he's committed to recuperating in private. "Thank you to my family and those close to me who've been supporting me / putting up with me! I'll see you all soon," he said, keeping his trademark humor intact.
Brazil's message was read aloud on Monday's Breakfast Show by fellow broadcaster Jeff Stelling, a former Sky Sports presenter who stepped in to deliver the news. "Great to hear from Big Al on the news there," Stelling remarked, reflecting the warmth and camaraderie Brazil has built over his long career.
Since TalkSport launched in 2000, Brazil has been a staple of the station, hosting various shows and becoming a beloved voice in British sports radio. But his connection to the game runs deeper than the microphone. A former striker for Ipswich Town from 1977 to 1983, Brazil netted an impressive 76 goals in six seasons at Portman Road, helping the club lift the FA Cup in 1978 and the UEFA Cup in 1981. He also earned 13 caps for Scotland, cementing his place in football history.
As Brazil takes time to heal, fans and colleagues alike are sending their best wishes, eager to welcome "Big Al" back to the airwaves when he's ready. For now, the focus is on rest and recovery—a reminder that even sports legends need to hit pause sometimes.
