Senior catcher Marlie Giles started the fireworks with a solo home run over the right-center field wall, sending a jolt through the stadium. That was just the beginning. The Spartans couldn't muster a response in the fifth, and the mercy rule was invoked, ending the game early. In the circle, Kaitlyn Pallozzi (9-0) earned the win, working through some traffic on the bases after a clean first inning. She allowed four hits and two walks while striking out two over five innings.
From her very first at-bat, Vandagriff carried an unmistakable confidence that spread through the entire Alabama lineup.
