There’s just something different about this Alabama softball team right now—and it showed in a big way Friday afternoon.
The No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament stormed into regional play at Rhoads Stadium with an emphatic 8-0 run-rule victory over USC Upstate in just five innings. From the roar of the crowd to the swagger in the dugout, the Crimson Tide looked every bit the championship contender, locking in from the first pitch and never looking back.
With the win, Alabama improves to 50-7 on the season—a milestone 50th victory that signals a powerhouse start to the road toward Oklahoma City. The Tide now advances to the winner’s bracket, where they’ll face the winner of Belmont and Southeastern on Saturday afternoon in Tuscaloosa.
It didn’t take long for the offense to make a statement. After a quiet first inning, the Crimson Tide erupted in the second with a six-run explosion that sent Rhoads Stadium into a frenzy. Marlie Giles started the fireworks with a solo shot to right-center, continuing her incredible season at the plate. Audrey Vandagriff used her speed to slide safely under the tag at home, making it 2-0. Then Brooke Wells delivered a huge two-run single with the bases loaded, and Alexis Pupillo capped the rally with a two-run double over the left fielder’s outstretched glove—pushing the lead to 6-0.
That inning shifted all the momentum and showcased why Alabama has been one of the most dangerous offensive teams in the country all season.
Vandagriff added an opposite-field solo home run in the third, continuing her stellar postseason play, before Pupillo tacked on another RBI single in the fourth to put the game firmly into run-rule territory.
While the bats were electric, freshman pitcher Kaitlyn Pallozzi was just as impressive in the circle. Making her first career NCAA Regional appearance, Pallozzi looked calm, composed, and completely unfazed by the moment. She tossed her second complete-game shutout of the season, working efficient innings and keeping USC Upstate off balance all afternoon.
For a team with championship aspirations, this was the kind of dominant start that sets the tone for a deep postseason run.
