Pep Guardiola has heaped praise on Nathan Ake, calling the Dutch defender "one of the best" he's ever managed, as Manchester City prepare to host Crystal Palace in a crucial Premier League clash.
Now in his sixth season at the Etihad, the 31-year-old has quietly become one of the most reliable figures in Guardiola's squad. With 175 appearances and 11 trophies to his name since joining from Bournemouth, Ake's versatility and professionalism have made him an indispensable part of City's defensive setup.
After returning to the starting lineup for City's 2-1 Carabao Cup final victory over Southampton at Wembley, Ake followed up with another commanding performance in the weekend win against Brentford. His ability to step in and deliver whenever called upon hasn't gone unnoticed by his manager.
"Nathan's focus and reliability are extraordinary," Guardiola said. "There are few players more dependable. If he has to play every few days, he struggles a bit, but in the Carabao Cup final and against Brentford, he was complete. Wow. He's one of the best I've ever had."
The City boss also highlighted Ake's character off the pitch. "Apart from his performances, he's one of the most incredible teammates—for his manager and his fellow players. He's been an incredible signing from Bournemouth. He played in the Champions League final in Istanbul. That's how reliable he is. Top guy and top player."
With Ake entering the final year of his contract next season, Guardiola was asked about the defender's future. "One more year, right? I wish he stays with us, but I don't know what's going to happen," the manager admitted.
City will look to close the gap on league leaders Arsenal to just two points when they face Crystal Palace on Wednesday evening. Guardiola was also asked about pundits writing off City's title chances after Arsenal's win over West Ham left the Gunners within two wins of their first Premier League crown in 20 years.
"We play tomorrow night, then go to Bournemouth, then Aston Villa here," Guardiola responded. "The importance is tomorrow. We see what happens, then the next one. When you lose focus, you're in a dangerous situation. I always think we can do it better, control what we can control. Never trust anything since I arrived a long time ago. Always learn, do better, blame yourself, and improve."
