Kolkata Knight Riders' tough start to the IPL 2026 season has been compounded by a financial penalty for captain Ajinkya Rahane. The skipper has been fined Rs 12 lakh after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their 32-run loss to the Chennai Super Kings on Tuesday.

This marks KKR's fourth defeat in five matches, leaving them anchored at the bottom of the table with a solitary point from a washed-out game. The fine, a standard sanction for a first over-rate offence under the IPL's Code of Conduct, adds another layer of frustration to a campaign struggling for momentum.

The match itself saw CSK, buoyed by a strong all-round performance, secure their second consecutive victory. After posting a competitive 192/5—powered by Sanju Samson's 48 and Dewald Brevis' 41—the Super Kings' bowling attack, led by the brilliant Noor Ahmad (3/21), stifled KKR's chase. The Afghan left-arm wrist-spinner was instrumental, dismissing Rahane for 28 and Cameron Green for a golden duck on consecutive deliveries to break the back of the Kolkata innings.

Despite a late fight from Rovman Powell (31*) and Ramandeep Singh (35), KKR fell well short, finishing at 160/7. The loss underscores the team's batting inconsistencies, particularly in the powerplay where they managed only 36 runs compared to CSK's explosive start.

For Chennai, the win provides a much-needed boost, lifting them to eighth place after beginning the season with three losses. The team continues to build rhythm while awaiting the potential return of the iconic MS Dhoni, who is still recovering from a calf injury.

Reflecting on the performance, a disappointed Rahane emphasized resilience. "We just have to keep that head up and just be positive and have that self-belief," he stated, acknowledging his bowlers' effort to restrict CSK after a costly powerplay but lamenting the batting unit's failure to launch.

As the tournament progresses, KKR will need to address these issues quickly, both on the field and with their over-rates, to turn their faltering campaign around.
