Ben Aitchison turned back the clock with a vintage bowling display, reminding everyone why he was once one of the most promising seamers in county cricket. Returning his best first-class figures since July 2022, Aitchison's 4-55 spearheaded Derbyshire's dominant performance on day three of their County Championship Division Two clash against Northamptonshire at the Central Co-op County Ground.
After missing the entire 2024 season with a back injury, the 26-year-old looked sharp and purposeful, ripping through the Northants batting lineup. He found able support from Rory Haydon, who claimed 3-72, and England spinner Shoaib Bashir, who chipped in with two wickets as the visitors were bundled out for 228 in their first innings.
The day didn't start without a fight from Northants, though. Calvin Harrison played a defiant innings of 107, sharing a gritty seventh-wicket stand of 105 runs from 230 balls with Lewis McManus (47). For a moment, it looked like the visitors might claw their way back into the contest. But Derbyshire's bowlers had other ideas.
Zak Chappell, who had bowled impressively without reward on day two, finally got his due in the morning session. He broke a stubborn fifth-wicket partnership by dismissing James Sales for 46, who had survived a dropped chance off Chappell the previous evening. The ball came back and kept slightly low, finally ending a 35-over vigil. In the very next over, George Bartlett clipped Bashir to mid-wicket, leaving Northants reeling at 116-6.
Harrison did offer some resistance, launching Bashir over wide long-on for a rare moment of aggression. But for the most part, he and McManus dug in, frustrating the hosts for 22 overs before lunch arrived with Northants at 173-6. The resistance continued into the afternoon session until the second new ball breathed fresh life into Derbyshire's attack.
Harrison cover-drove Haydon for consecutive boundaries on his way to a well-earned century, but the young fast bowler had the last laugh, shaping one back in to knock out middle stump. Aitchison then cleaned up the tail in quick succession, accounting for Ben Sanderson and George Scrimshaw, leaving Harry Conway to somehow survive as Northants were bowled out for 228.
Forced to follow on, Northants closed the day at 66-2, still trailing by 310 runs with eight second-innings wickets in hand. Bashir struck late, bowling Ricardo Vasconcelos just before stumps, giving Derbyshire a firm grip on the match heading into day four.
For fans of the longer format, this was a masterclass in patience and perseverance—qualities that define the best county cricket has to offer. And for those who love the game's finer details, Aitchison's comeback story is one worth following closely.
