The AAAA state track and field championships delivered an action-packed day at Richland Northeast High School on May 14, with Hilton Head and South Pointe taking home the top team honors. But for Aiken County, the real story was the individual brilliance and record-breaking performances that lit up the Columbia track.

North Augusta's Jade Council made history, smashing her school's record in the girls' 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:06.58 to claim third place. It was a moment that showcased not just speed, but the kind of determination that defines champions.

Midland Valley's Kaleb Hester proved he's a force to be reckoned with, earning two trips to the podium. He powered to second place in the boys' 100-meter hurdles (14.66 seconds) and added a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles (54.86 seconds). Meanwhile, Aiken's Christopher Baxley ran a strong 55.63 in the 400 hurdles to take fourth.

The boys' 400-meter dash was a showcase of Aiken County speed, with three local athletes finishing in the top 11. Aiken's James Howard led the pack in fifth place at 49.62 seconds, followed closely by Midland Valley's Bruce Hobbs in sixth (49.64) and Johnathon Wright in 11th (50.96). Howard also showed his versatility with a 10th-place finish in the long jump at 6.08 meters.

In the field events, North Augusta's Ayden Young soared to second place in the boys' high jump, clearing 1.95 meters. South Aiken's Jamaal Wilson (1.80m) and Midland Valley's J.P. Gaston (1.75m) also competed well. Aiken's Sandi King made her mark in the girls' javelin, throwing 38.92 meters for third place, while also finishing 14th in the 800 meters.

The relays brought plenty of excitement, with Aiken's boys' 4x400 team taking fifth (3:23.07) and Midland Valley close behind in sixth. On the girls' side, Aiken's 4x100 relay finished 11th (50.26 seconds), just ahead of South Aiken in 12th (50.30).

Other notable performances included South Aiken's Nyla Pope in the girls' 200 meters (15th, 26.26 seconds) and Aiken's Aubrey Shoaf in the girls' 3200 meters (14th, 12:47.96). Midland Valley led Aiken County's boys with a 14th-place team finish, while North Augusta's girls were the top local squad at 23rd overall.

Whether you're chasing records or just chasing your personal best, every race and every jump matters. That's the spirit that makes track and field—and the athletes who wear our gear—truly inspiring.
