The Providence Bruins have evened up the Atlantic Division Semifinals, taking down the Springfield Thunderbirds 2-1 in a hard-fought Game 2 of the 2026 Calder Cup Playoffs. With the series now tied 1-1, all eyes are on the Bruins' standout netminder, who delivered a performance worthy of his MVP status.
Providence got off to a sluggish start, managing just one shot in the opening minutes. But they found their stride quickly, outshooting Springfield 7-2 over the next four-plus minutes. Forward Matej Blumel broke the ice with the game's first goal, giving the Bruins an early lead. However, a costly tripping penalty led to a power-play tally from Thunderbirds forward Dillon Dube, knotting the game at 1-1. Providence responded with a late push, outshooting Springfield 5-1 in the final 8:15 of the first period and netting what would prove to be the game-winner.
The second period was a defensive battle. Despite the Bruins outshooting the Thunderbirds 12-6, neither team could find the back of the net. Both squads went 0-for-4 on the power play in the frame, leaving the score deadlocked heading into the third.
Springfield came out firing in the final period, controlling the pace with 10 of the first 11 shots in the opening 10:50, aided by two power-play opportunities. But the Thunderbirds couldn't solve AHL MVP Micheal DiPietro. With the extra attacker on the ice in the closing seconds, Springfield peppered the Providence goalie with four shots in just 20 seconds. DiPietro stood tall, preserving the 2-1 lead and securing the series-tying win.
DiPietro was sensational, stopping 27 of 28 shots for a .964 save percentage. On the other end, Springfield's Georgi Romanov was nearly as sharp, making 29 saves on 31 shots for a .935 save percentage. While the Thunderbirds outshot the Bruins 31-29 overall, it was DiPietro's clutch play that made the difference.
The series now shifts to Springfield for Game 3, with both teams looking to seize momentum in this tightly contested playoff battle.
