Bayern Munich might have unearthed a gem in Jonas Urbig. The young goalkeeper may currently sit behind Manuel Neuer in the club's pecking order, but his recent display against Wolfsburg suggests he could be one of Germany's finest shot-stoppers.
In a tense 1-0 victory over Wolfsburg, Urbig delivered a masterclass between the posts with five crucial saves. His composure under pressure has sparked talk of a potential call-up to Julian Nagelsmann's World Cup squad—a notion supported by German football legend Lothar Matthäus.
When asked about Matthäus's endorsement, Urbig remained grounded. "First of all, I'm happy that Lothar has a positive opinion on me. I'm training hard every day and taking it day by day and week by week," he said. "Now we still have a home game in the league and the DFB-Pokal final, unfortunately not the Champions League final. After that, I'll think about the national team."
It's a measured response from a player who knows his time will come. Despite limited game time this season, Urbig's raw talent is undeniable. With Neuer's future uncertain, the former FC Köln prospect could be the next great German goalkeeper—whether Nagelsmann gives him the nod this summer or waits for the next cycle.
