After East girls tennis success, Martinez returns to girls soccer, but at Wasco

Marty Martinez, who for the last two seasons at East High was the varsity girls tennis head coach and led the Blades to back-to-back CIF Central Section Division III finals appearances and won the title in 2025, has been hired as the new Wasco High girls soccer coach. Martinez’s hiring was approved during a Wasco Union High School District Board of Trustees meeting Thursday night. “It’s a ...

Marty Martinez is trading in his tennis racket for a whistle and a new challenge. After leading the East High girls tennis team to historic success, including a CIF Central Section Division III championship in 2025, the decorated coach is returning to his roots on the pitch. Martinez has been officially hired as the new head coach of the Wasco High girls soccer team.

His move marks a significant shift after two dominant seasons with the Blades' tennis program, where he earned All-Area Coach of the Year honors twice and built a powerhouse that went a combined 52-4. However, the soccer field is familiar territory for Martinez, who brings a wealth of local coaching experience to Wasco.

"It's a perfect fit," Martinez said of his new role. "I love the small community, the facilities are great, and there's a great support system."

While his recent accolades are in tennis, Martinez's soccer resume is deeply impressive. He previously coached East's girls soccer program for nine seasons, amassing a stellar 178-47-23 record and leading the team to multiple CIF finals. His coaching journey also includes successful stints with East's boys soccer team and at Ridgeview High, showcasing his versatile ability to build competitive programs.

This transition follows Martinez's indication that he would not return to East High after the tennis season concluded, seeking a new opportunity in girls soccer. He leaves behind a tremendous legacy at East, expressing gratitude for his 19 years there.

"I'll always be grateful to East High and cherish every coaching moment," Martinez stated. "But after 19 years of coaching at East, it ran its course. It's time for a new challenge. I like new challenges."

Now, he turns his focus to the Wasco Tigers, aiming to bring his proven formula for success—building strong team culture and achieving on-field results—to a new community and a new squad.
