The race for FIFA's top job is already heating up, and African football has thrown its weight behind Gianni Infantino's bid for a historic fourth term as president of the global governing body. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced its "unanimous" support for Infantino following a meeting held ahead of the FIFA Congress in Vancouver, setting the stage for a re-election campaign in 2027.

Infantino first took the reins at FIFA in 2016, stepping into the role during a turbulent period marked by the corruption scandal that forced his predecessor, Sepp Blatter, out of office. Since then, the Swiss-Italian administrator has overseen significant changes in world football, including the expansion of the World Cup and major reforms to the game's governance.

Interestingly, while FIFA's statutes typically limit presidents to three terms, Infantino is eligible to run again because his initial term—a partial stint from 2016 to 2019 following Blatter's ouster—does not count toward the official term limit. This unique loophole has cleared the path for what could be an unprecedented fourth term.

CAF's endorsement follows a similar show of support from South America's CONMEBOL, which pledged its backing to Infantino earlier this April. With two major confederations now in his corner, the momentum appears to be building for the FIFA president's re-election bid—a move that could shape the future of football governance for years to come.
