Excitement is building for a young squad of acrobatic gymnasts as they prepare to take the international stage for the very first time. The Cheltenham Academy of Acrobatic Gymnastics (CAAG) is heading to the Geneva International Acro Cup 2026 in Switzerland, kicking off this Thursday. They'll be going head-to-head with talented teams from Italy, France, Brazil, and the host nation, Switzerland—a true test of skill on a global platform.
This ambitious journey didn't happen overnight. The competition squad has been putting in the work since the start of the year, with extra one-on-one sessions and relentless practice. To make it all possible, the club has raised nearly £5,000 to fund the trip. "They've practised very, very hard," says coach Liv Mighten. "We can't wait to go."
Acrobatic gymnastics is all about teamwork and trust. Routines are performed by groups of two to four, with "bases" providing support and strength, while lighter "tops" execute breathtaking aerial stunts. It's a sport that demands precision, coordination, and artistry—qualities these young athletes have been honing for months.
The team's age range is impressively wide, from just seven years old to nearly 17. For many, this is a dream come true. Freya, 13, shares her excitement: "It's really cool because we've never been able to do it before. It's going to be quick, tense, but really fun." Meanwhile, 10-year-old Alina reflects on her personal growth: "I couldn't even do a cartwheel when I came here, but now I do front handsprings. I'm nervous but also excited."
At the competition, their routines will be judged on difficulty, execution, and artistry—the same elements that make this sport so captivating to watch. Coach Mighten is confident in her squad: "It's very popular, they just love it, and they do really well."
For these young gymnasts, this event is more than just a competition—it's a celebration of their hard work, teamwork, and the joy of pushing boundaries. Whether they're soaring through the air or lifting each other up, they're ready to shine on the world stage.
