It's been a whirlwind of a week for Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers. The four-time MVP has reportedly been spending time in the Steel City, but if you're expecting a handshake deal to be announced any minute, you might want to pump the brakes.

According to the Post-Gazette's Gerry Dulac, while Rodgers has been in Pittsburgh, he has yet to actually sit down with the team to discuss a contract. Instead, it's his agent, David Dunn, who has been handling the conversations with Steelers brass. This is a notable detail, especially with the team's rookie minicamp already underway.

Earlier in the week, reports suggested that Rodgers was expected to meet with the team on Friday and was likely to sign on for a second season in Pittsburgh. That timeline has come and gone, but the door is far from closed. Rodgers could still join the talks in the coming days.

The Steelers have been playing this one cool. Despite a glaring need at quarterback, the team didn't make a big free-agent splash at the position. Instead, they waited until the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft to select Drew Allar. While a third-round pick is meaningful, it's hardly a guarantee that Allar is the franchise's long-term answer.

That strategy left the door wide open for Rodgers to return as the team's starter. And just in case there was any doubt about their intentions, the Steelers made a major move in late April by placing the transition tag on the veteran passer. This gives Pittsburgh the right to match any offer Rodgers receives from another team. It doesn't guarantee he'll stay, but it's a pretty clear message: the Steelers want him back.

Adding another layer to this story is the team's recent coaching change. The Steelers hired former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy to replace Mike Tomlin. McCarthy and Rodgers have a deep history together, having worked side-by-side for 13 seasons in Green Bay. During that stretch, the Packers made the playoffs nine times, Rodgers won two MVP awards, and the duo captured a Super Bowl title.

For now, the quarterback situation remains a waiting game. But with a familiar face on the sideline and the transition tag in place, all signs point to Rodgers donning the black and gold again in 2026.
