The New York Yankees and the fan base have to feel pretty good about how the 2026 MLB season has gone, currently sitting in first place in the American League East and seeing their two biggest rivals, the Boston Red Sox and New York Mets, play as two of the worst teams in Major League Baseball.

Not only that, but the Red Sox decided to get rid of Alex Cora, and many believe that Mets skipper Carlos Mendoza is the next in line.

While fans might be happy about it, that typically gets a different response from managers around the league, including Yankees skipper Aaron Boone, who has spoken about the Red Sox's decision to move on from Cora.

“I think somebody of Alex’s stature in the game, and obviously being a division rival and our chief rival, obviously caught us all off guard, shook the world — or shook us a little bit, like, ‘Who saw that kind of shake-up coming at this point?’ ” Boone said Sunday morning, per the Post. “He’s going to be fine and great. He’ll have many opportunities to do whatever he wants moving forward.”

While they might have been rivals on the field, there seems to be a lot of respect between Cora and Boone, who understand what it takes to coach at a very high level in some of the toughest places in the world.

Many have wanted Boone fired in the past, and it's almost crazy to think that, considering some of the success he's found in New York, despite not winning a World Series just yet.

On the other side, Boone might have had a direct impact on Cora getting fired, as the Yankees recently swept them earlier in the week in a series in which Boston scored three runs.

“The Yankees may have had at least a partial hand in the gutting of the Red Sox coaching staff after sweeping them in Boston earlier this week. Red Sox decision-makers said Sunday they decided to fire Cora and his coaches Saturday morning,” Greg Joyce of the New York Post wrote.
