A flurry of roster moves

The Athletics made a flurry of roster moves on Tuesday, shaking things up ahead of their series opener against the Cardinals. It's been a busy day for the front office, with several key changes that could shape the team's immediate future.

The headline-grabbing move is the promotion of Henry Bolte, one of the organization's top prospects. The former second-round pick has been absolutely crushing Triple-A pitching this season, and now he gets his first call-up to the majors. With Denzel Clarke on the injured list and Tyler Soderstrom and Lawrence Butler struggling at the plate, there's a clear path for Bolte to make an immediate impact. If he seizes this opportunity, he might never look back.

On the injury front, the news isn't as bright. Jacob Wilson is headed to the IL after hurting his shoulder over the weekend. The runner-up in last year's AL Rookie of the Year voting was seen in a sling, so this move isn't surprising. The silver lining? It's his non-throwing shoulder, which suggests it's not a worst-case scenario. Still, the team will be cautious with their young infielder. Expect him to be sidelined for at least a month, with Darell Hernaiz likely getting plenty of time at shortstop in his absence.

To add some infield depth, the A's recalled Michael Stefanic. The 30-year-old has spent parts of four seasons in the big leagues with the Angels and Blue Jays before signing a minor league deal with Oakland this offseason. He's been solid for the Aviators, slashing .250/.351/.355 with two home runs and three steals. While he has some experience at shortstop, he's mostly played second and third base this season. With Max Muncy and Jacob Wilson both out, Stefanic is a valuable depth piece for manager Mark Kotsay.

To make room for Stefanic on the roster, the team optioned third baseman Brett Harris to Triple-A. The shine has worn off Harris after a tough stretch in limited big-league opportunities—he managed just four at-bats before the demotion. It's a reminder that in the majors, every chance counts.
