The Athletics' road trip hit a rough patch in Philadelphia, as the bullpen's struggles led to a disappointing 9-1 loss against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. The A's came into this three-game series hoping to build momentum, but instead found themselves on the wrong end of a lopsided affair.

Luis Severino started strong for Oakland, dancing out of trouble in the first two innings to keep the game scoreless. However, the third inning proved fateful when Bryce Harper launched his eighth home run of the season, putting the Phillies up 1-0. Despite the early setback, Severino battled through five innings, allowing just one earned run on seven hits and two walks while striking out three—a solid outing that deserved better support.

The game unraveled in the late innings when the A's bullpen took over. After Scott Barlow worked a clean sixth, Mark Leiter Jr. entered in the seventh and immediately faced trouble. Trea Turner doubled, Harper walked, and Adolis García delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. The Phillies kept the line moving as Brandon Marsh singled and J.T. Realmuto doubled, scoring two more runs. Tyler Ferguson replaced Leiter but struggled mightily, allowing a Bryson Stott homer to deep right-center that pushed the lead to 6-0. Ferguson's rough outing continued as he surrendered another run in the seventh on hits by Justin Crawford and Turner, making it 7-0.

The Phillies weren't finished. In the eighth inning, Harper delivered the knockout blow with his second homer of the game—a bases-clearing blast that stretched the lead to 9-0. Meanwhile, Phillies starter Cristopher Sánchez was dominant, tossing eight scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts and just three hits allowed. The A's finally broke through in the ninth when Darell Hernaiz walked with the bases loaded to drive in Colby Thomas, avoiding the shutout but doing little to erase the sting of a tough loss.

For A's fans, this game highlighted the team's ongoing bullpen issues—a critical area that often determines the outcome of close contests. As the series continues, Oakland will need to regroup and find answers quickly if they hope to compete in this tough ballpark.
