For 25 years, Coventry City fans held onto a promise—a simple sign reading "We'll be back" waved defiantly after relegation in 2001. On Bank Holiday Monday, that promise was finally kept in spectacular fashion.
More than 50,000 Sky Blues supporters flooded Coventry's War Memorial Park to celebrate the club's Championship title win and long-awaited return to the Premier League. The journey back to the top flight took them through the depths of England's fourth tier, making this triumph all the sweeter.
The celebration began with an electric bus parade departing from the Coventry Building Society Arena, with that iconic sign recreated on the front of the bus. As the procession wound through the city, fans created an atmosphere described as "incredible" and raucous, complete with vuvuzelas echoing through the streets.
The party reached its peak at War Memorial Park, where players took the stage before Coventry band The Enemy delivered a powerful performance of their anthem "We'll Live and Die in These Towns"—the same song that has sent chills down spines at every home game, timed perfectly to hit its chorus just before kick-off.
Singer Tom Grennan, who also performed for the crowd, captured the emotion of the day: "This is one gig that I'll look back on and think wow. This city has taken me in and called me one of their own. I've been a Cov fan since 2016, seen them in League Two, and to see where they are today is absolutely amazing."
The Championship title was secured under the guidance of England legend Frank Lampard, with the Sky Blues amassing an impressive 95 points—finishing 11 clear of Ipswich Town. Throughout the parade, Lampard was spotted wearing a retro Coventry City tracksuit, sharing celebratory beers with his players in what was clearly an emotional moment for everyone involved.
"I'm a bit speechless," the manager admitted, and for a city that waited a quarter-century for this moment, the feeling was shared by all 50,000 fans who made the day unforgettable.
