Is there growing unrest at FC Bayern?

Behind the scenes at Bayern Munich, a storm may be brewing. While the players fight for titles on the pitch, a reported leadership divide is threatening the club's famed stability. According to German outlet Kicker, the working relationship between board member for sport Max Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund is being described as little more than a "marriage of convenience."

The core of the issue appears to be a power dynamic that leaves Eberl on the periphery. While Freund reportedly enjoys an excellent rapport with CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen, Eberl is said to feel sidelined in their interactions. This internal friction is a familiar, and unwelcome, echo for Bayern fans. It recalls the previous public rift between former coach Hansi Flick and sporting director Hasan "Brazzo" Salihamidžić—a conflict that ultimately contributed to a period of upheaval at the club.

The situation is coming to a head. Bayern's supervisory board is set to meet at the end of May to discuss the futures of both Eberl and Freund, whose contracts run until 2027. Their long-term extensions are now in question, with their professional relationship a key point of debate. Eberl is believed to have the backing of supervisory board chairman Herbert Hainer, but faces a significant hurdle: the reported skepticism of club legends and powerbrokers Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

Eberl's tenure has been a mixed bag. He has overseen some successful signings and sales since his arrival in early 2024, but his handling of key contract extensions has reportedly failed to impress the higher-ups. With Freund having been brought in the previous summer after a difficult transfer window, the pressure is on for this leadership duo to find unity. For a club synonymous with success, internal harmony is just as critical as the talent on the field. The coming weeks will reveal if this partnership can be salvaged or if another chapter of Bayern's boardroom drama is about to unfold.
