Tigers manager A.J. Hinch has been suspended one game by Major League Baseball after Tuesday’s incident.

Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch will be watching Wednesday night's game from home after Major League Baseball handed down a one-game suspension following Tuesday's heated benches-clearing incident against the Boston Red Sox at Comerica Park.

The suspension, which also includes an undisclosed fine, stems from a controversial fourth-inning sequence involving Tigers pitcher Framber Valdez and Red Sox infielder Trevor Story. MLB's official statement confirmed that Valdez was suspended for intentionally throwing at Story, and under league rules, managers are automatically held accountable for such on-field incidents involving intentional hit-by-pitches.

Hinch will serve the suspension immediately, meaning Detroit will be without its skipper for the series finale against Boston. While assistant coaches will step in to handle in-game duties, losing Hinch—even for just one night—adds another layer of distraction to a Tigers club already navigating a challenging stretch.

The suspension comes at a particularly tough time for Detroit. Hinch has been a steadying presence throughout a season marred by injuries to key pitchers like Tarik Skubal, Casey Mize, and Justin Verlander, not to mention several others. Now, the Tigers must find a way to compete without one of their most important voices in the dugout.

Although Hinch acknowledged after Tuesday's game that he understood "the optics" surrounding the Valdez incident, MLB ultimately decided discipline was necessary. The league's ruling sends a clear message that managers will continue to be held responsible in situations involving retaliatory pitches or escalating tensions.

For a team already scrambling to piece together innings after its pitching staff was ravaged by injuries, temporarily losing their manager only adds to the challenge. The Tigers will need to dig deep and stay focused as they look to close out the series against Boston without Hinch at the helm.
