The Detroit Tigers and their fans can finally breathe a collective sigh of relief. After days of anxious waiting, manager A.J. Hinch delivered some much-needed positive news regarding ace pitcher Tarik Skubal's elbow surgery.
"All reports are positive and optimistic," Hinch shared Friday, via the Detroit Free Press, putting to rest the worst fears that had been swirling since Skubal's last outing against Atlanta.
The reigning two-time American League Cy Young winner underwent arthroscopic surgery Wednesday in Los Angeles to remove a loose bone chip from his left elbow. The procedure was performed by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache, and early indications suggest everything went according to plan.
While this is undoubtedly encouraging, the Tigers are taking a cautious approach when it comes to Skubal's return timeline. When asked about when fans might see their star left-hander back on the mound, Hinch was measured in his response.
"Everyone is going to want to talk about a timeline," Hinch said. "Everyone is racing to a lot of people that are throwing out timelines. The reality is, the most important step for him is the one that's right in front of him."
For now, that step is rehabilitation. The 29-year-old will head to Lakeland, Florida—home of the Tigers' spring training complex—to begin his recovery under the watchful eye of the organization's medical staff. Hinch made it clear there's no rush: "He will not resume throwing in the next few days. I don't know when that day is going to be, but that next step of rehab is the one that we're going to focus on—not some random date in the future that simply would be a guess at this point."
This cautious approach makes sense, especially with Skubal expected to become a free agent following the 2026 season. The Tigers understand that getting this recovery right is just as important as getting it done quickly.
For now, the message from Detroit is clear: patience is the play, and the early returns are promising. For a team that relies heavily on its ace, that's the best news they could have hoped for.
