The 2026 season is shaping up to be a breakout year for New England Patriots wide receiver Romeo Doubs—and that's true whether or not the team lands superstar A.J. Brown in a trade.
Doubs is currently penciled in as the Patriots' No. 1 receiver, and for good reason. After being acquired from the Green Bay Packers, the 26-year-old Nevada product posted 724 receiving yards and six touchdowns in 2025. More importantly, he looked like a receiver on the verge of a 1,000-yard season, showing the kind of route-running and hands that translate into a top-target role.
That role was previously held by Stefon Diggs, who was targeted 102 times last season and hauled in 85 catches for 1,013 yards. Doubs is primed to inherit those opportunities. On the current Patriots depth chart, he projects as the clear primary target.
Of course, the receiving room isn't set in stone. Kayshon Boutte could return and demand more targets, while Mack Hollins is expected to maintain his role as a steady veteran presence. Head coach Mike Vrabel has also hinted that DeMario Douglas is in line for a bigger workload in 2026.
Then there's the A.J. Brown factor. The Philadelphia Eagles star wideout is widely expected to be traded to New England in the coming weeks. If that happens, Brown—a proven 1,000-yard receiver with championship pedigree—would immediately become the top option, sliding Doubs into the WR2 spot.
But here's the good news for Doubs: even with Brown in the lineup, his rise isn't slowed—it's just reshaped. Without Brown, Doubs is on pace for his first career 1,000-yard season, likely on 75 or more receptions (up from 55 in 2025). With Brown drawing top coverage, Doubs still has the talent to push 900 yards while playing his A-game.
Either way, Romeo Doubs is set to be a key piece of the Patriots' passing attack in 2026. Whether he's the featured star or the perfect complement, his arrow is pointing straight up.
